13_AWS - Additional Software & Services

Amazon Web Services

2006: Amazon launched Amazon Web Service (AWS) on a utility computing basis although the initial released dated back to July 2002.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a collection of remote computing services (also called web services) that together make up a cloud computing platform, offered over the Internet by Amazon.com.

The most central and well-known of these services are Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud )and Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service).

Book:

Amazon Web Services is based on SOA standards, including HTTP, REST, and SOAP transfer protocols, open source and commercial operating systems, application servers, and browser-based access.

Topics:

1.       AWS Billing and Cost Management

2.       AWS Marketplace

3.       AWS Support

4.       Alexa Top Sites

5.       Alexa Web Information Service

6.       Amazon Silk

7.       AWS GovCloud (US)

1). AWS Billing and Cost Management

·         Amazon Web Services (AWS) bills your account or accounts, for usage, which ensures that you pay for only what you use.

·         To help you manage your charges, AWS provides features that help you monitor your costs and pay your bill for one or many AWS accounts that you use in the cloud.

2). AWS Marketplace

·         AWS Marketplace is an online store where you can buy or sell software that runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

·         As a subscriber, you can find, buy, and quickly deploy software that runs on AWS. As a seller, you can manage the sales channel for products you sell.

·         AWS Marketplace complements programs like Amazon DevPay and the Amazon Partner Network.

AWS Marketplace is an online store where, as a subscriber, you can find, buy, and quickly deploy software that runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This software is available in the form of Amazon Machine Images (AMIs).

An AMI contains all the information necessary to boot an Amazon EC2 instance with your software.

An EC2 instance is the virtual computing environment available from the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) web service.

An AMI is like a template of a computer's root volume. For example, an AMI might contain the software to act as a web server (Linux, Apache, and your web site) or it might contain the software to act as a Hadoop node (Linux, Hadoop, and a custom application). You can launch one or more EC2 instances from an AMI.

To buy software through AWS Marketplace, you subscribe to the software by purchasing a paid AMI, and then launch the software as an EC2 instance.

3). AWS Support

AWS Support provides support for users of Amazon Web Services.

All users have access to account and billing help in the AWS Support Center. In addition, customers with some support plans have access to additional features, including AWS Trusted Advisor and an API for programmatic access to support cases and Trusted Advisor.

AWS Support is a one-on-one, fast-response support channel that is staffed with experienced support engineers.

The service helps customers get the most from the products and features provided by Amazon Web Services.

There are four levels, or tiers, of AWS Support: Basic, Developer, Business, and Enterprise.

The Basic tier is free of charge and offers support for account and billing questions and service limit increases. The other tiers offer an unlimited number of technical support cases with pay-by-the-month pricing and no long-term contracts,

4). Alexa Top Sites

Alexa Top Sites is a web service that provides Lists Of Web Sites, ordered by Alexa Traffic Rank. Using this web service, developers can page through lists of top sites and incorporate traffic data into their applications.

The following documentation describes how to use Alexa Top Sites.

5). Alexa Web Information Service (AWIS)

AWIS offers a Platform For Creating Innovative Web solutions and Services based on Alexa's vast information about web sites, accessible with a web services API.

6). Amazon Silk

Amazon Silk is a next-generation web browser available only on Kindle Fire.

Built on a split architecture that divides processing between the client and the Amazon cloud, Silk is designed to create a faster, more responsive mobile browsing experience.
